PET Resins
Polyethylene terephthalate (PET) resin is used for daily-use containers such as plastic beverage bottles, food containers for salads and convenience foods, shampoo bottles and hygiene product bottles, as well as raw materials for polyester materials in the form of synthetic fibers. Since PET rein is easily collected and recycled, it is expected to be used as an environmentally friendly raw material for a variety of applications in the future. Iwatani has signed an agreement to act as agent for Indorama Ventures PCL, among the world’s largest PET resin manufacturers, and currently sells more than approximately 100 thousand tons of PET resin annually. In partnership with Indorama Ventures PCL, we developed bio-PET resin in 2010 and a highly recyclable aluminum catalyst PET resin in 2016 to offer products meeting market needs.

Common PET Resins
This material is produced from terephthalic acid and monoethylene glycol in a chemical reaction that takes place under high temperature and high vacuum conditions. It’s suitable for a wide range of applications, including beverage and cosmetics bottles.

Bio-PET Resins
Bio-PET resins are manufactured using plant-based raw materials in the form of monoethylene glycol (30% of the raw materials making up PET resin) refined from molasses, a byproduct of sugar cane processing. Iwatani began selling bio-PET resin in 2010 and currently has the No. 1 market share in Japan, handling 30 thousand tons in 2021.

Aluminum Catalyst PET Resins
Iwatani launched sales of highly recyclable aluminum catalyst PET resins in 2016. Its production is entrusted to Indorama Ventures PCL, one of the world’s largest PET resin manufacturers, through licensed use of Toyobo Co., Ltd.’s patented GS catalyst technology.
