Industrial Gases

Strengths

Leading Hydrogen & Helium Supplier in Japan*1
Safe & Reliable Delivery to Customers is our Top Priority

Industrial gas is a general term for gases widely used in industries, excluding LNG and LPG used at home. Iwatani handles a wide variety of industrial gases that can be utilized in various fields. We have established safe & reliable supply chains for respective gases, from air separation gases (e.g., oxygen, nitrogen, argon) to hydrogen (both produced in our own plants), and helium, a natural resource procured from overseas. Of these, we boast we have been the No. 1 supplier of hydrogen and helium in Japan with a proven track record.

*1 Our market share in Japan is approximately 70% for gaseous and liquefied hydrogen combined, and also No.1 for helium according to our research as of May 2022.

Features

01Stable Supply of Air Separation Gases

Oxygen, nitrogen, and argon are manufactured from liquefied air by leveraging the corresponding different boiling points. These gases are used across a wide range of fields, including the steel industry, welding, semiconductors, food industry, and medicine. We have established a reliable nationwide supply system. We also offer various applications technologies that harness the characteristics of specific gases.

Typical Uses for Air Separation Gases

  • Steel
  • Welding
  • Semiconductors
  • Food
  • Medicine

02No.1 Hydrogen Market Share Supplier in Japan

We were among the first to identify hydrogen’s potential. Since our first sales of hydrogen in 1941, we have initiated hydrogen production, established supply chains, promoted application developments, and continued to support its expanded use in Japan. We hold the leading market share for gaseous and liquefied hydrogen combined in Japan and account for a 100% share of liquefied hydrogen as Japan’s sole producer.

Hydrogen Market Share

Our market share in Japan is 100% for liquefied hydrogen, and approximately 70% for gaseous and liquefied hydrogen combined according to our research as of May 2022.

03Robust Production Capacity and Handling Technologies for Liquefied Hydrogen

Liquefying hydrogen reduces its volume to 1/800, dramatically improving efficiency of transportation and storage. Moreover, it is extremely pure (99.9999% or higher). These outstanding features have expanded applications and increased demand. We are operating three liquefied hydrogen production plants in Japan, allowing us to meet increasing demand, and our advanced handling technologies ensures safe and reliable delivery of liquefied hydrogen at -253°C to customers with minimal boil-off gas.

04Leading Japanese Domestic Market Share for Helium

We ensure a stable supply through stable dual source procurement from Qatar and the U.S., with which it has direct import rights. In addition to Japan’s leading market share, We are active in China and Southeast Asia. Based on growing demand for helium both in Japan and overseas, to supplement its Osaka Helium Center, We opened the Tokyo Helium Center in 2019, one of the largest such facilities in Japan. It also operates overseas manufacturing sites in China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Qatar.
