A Mobile Power Generation Car Equipped with a Pure Hydrogen-Type 10kW-Grade Fuel Cell Has Been Completed

Iwatani Corporation

Iwatani Corporation (Head office: Tokyo and Osaka, President: Akiji MAKINO, Paid-in Capital: 20,000 million yen) has made various efforts to develop new fuel cell applications. Iwatani has developed “a mobile fuel cell power generation car, equipped with a pure hydrogen-type fuel cell”; exhibiting the high environmental performance of fuel cells alongside the mobility of power generation cars, and completed this product line with special hydrogen trailers. This car has been developed under a grant from the “Technological development for standardization of fuel cells in new utilization” project conducted by the New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO). Iwatani will strive for further improvement with its practical application through test operation in mind, as well as its commercialization in FY2010.

[Expansion of new application as clean power generation cars]

Pure hydrogen-type fuel cells are capable of generating clean electricity with no exhaust gas. They are considered as the master cards of dispersed power system with excellent environmental characteristics because they have the least noise and vibration as well as the least CO2 emissions. Pure hydrogen-type fuel cell power generation cars with these characteristics will show enhanced convenience in the following wider application fields: (1) when operated in confined spaces like indoors and tunnels, (2) night construction works for various events and in residential streets and (3) emergency power sources during disasters. They will exhibit certain advantages in comparison to conventional technologies.

[Development of a hydrogen supply system to be safe, practical, easy to use and convenient]

Following the initial development of fuel cell power generation cars in Japan, a brand-new hydrogen supply system, using a hydrogen trailer equipped with a 35MPa filling cylinder, has been developed to enable nominal continuous operation for extended periods of 16 hours or more. Extra hydrogen containers can be added via generic piping joints and the switching of supply sources is automatically performed: operations are also possible at extreme lengths if bulk containers or storage equipment are used with this system.

[Debut at Earth Day Tokyo]

This power generation system was scheduled to supply power for the PA system at the PeaceMile stages during “Earth Day Tokyo 2009,” one of the largest environmental events held in Yoyogi Park on April 18-19, 2009. Iwatani was glad to offer the opportunity to individuals to familiarize themselves with hydrogen energy for the audience at the event, which attracts around 120 thousand people every year.

Iwatani will work for its application development in the areas around Kansai International Airport, as well as its practical applications and commercialization, with system specifications, reliability and costs in mind and based on customers’ needs.
