Joint development of a “liquid-hydrogen storage type mobile refueling station” - “Hydrogen Delivery Services” - a bridge to the hydrogen energy era -

Iwatani International Corporation (Headquarters: Osaka & Tokyo, President: Akiji Makino, Capital: 20,000 million yen) has developed a vehicle which functions as a “mobile hydrogen station” for supplying hydrogen in cooperation with Kansai Electric Power Co., Inc. (Headquarters: Osaka, President: Shosuke Mori, Capital: 489.3 billion yen), and plans operation in the Kansai area.
In the earliest stage of a hydrogen energy based society, when only a low demand for hydrogen is expected, the rapid building of commercial, large-scale hydrogen stations will be impractical. A more practical solution is, first of all, to have networks of mobile, or small and simple hydrogen stations, and then to expand the hydrogen supply networks in each region, step by step, as demand grows.
The following uses of “liquid-hydrogen storage type mobile refueling station” can be foreseen as part of the implementation of a hydrogen supply infrastructure in the early stages of a hydrogen energy society:
(1) As a mobile hydrogen station delivery service that travels around areas where there is a demand for hydrogen, directly filling hydrogen fuel based equipment.
(2) As a hydrogen supply vehicle for simplified hydrogen stations, called ‘satellite hydrogen stations’, each simply consisting of an accumulator and a dispenser.
The mobile hydrogen station is used for supplying hydrogen to satellite stations which will be constructed as part of the JHFC project – which aims to verify the usability etc. of liquid hydrogen through experimental operation.
【Main features】
1. All the required components can be accommodated in a semi-trailer truck by downsizing the major components, cutting the delivery time thereby implementing a more flexible hydrogen supply system.
2.A mobile hydrogen station containing all the features - a liquid hydrogen tank, filling equipment and utilities - in the trailer, is the first of its kind in Japan.
3. Liquid hydrogen has a higher storage density, and requires less space, than compressed hydrogen.
4. A 2000-litter liquid hydrogen tank can fill 15 fuel-cell vehicles.
5. In addition to direct feed of fuel to hydrogen fuel driven vehicles at 35MPa, liquid hydrogen can be fed to accumulators, such as satellite stations, at 40MPa.
6..Mobile stations can be used as stationary hydrogen stations by detaching the tractor head and anchoring the vehicle.
(In such cases, notifying the municipal government would be required by the High Pressure Gas Safety Law.)
